Lichtenstein: 5 Juin 1963
Catalog of a Roy Lichtenstein exhibition held at the Galerie Ileana Sonnabend in Paris in June 1963. An important early solo show for Lichtenstein, whose breakout Pop Art show at Castelli in New York took place the year before, and an early show for Sonnabend, whose Paris gallery opened in 1962, nine years ahead of her first SoHo/New York showroom. Sonnabend, who was married to Leo Castelli for 27 years, was instrumental in introducing 1960’s American art to European audiences, and vice versa in the 1970’s. Pictured are such notable works as Draw (1963), I…Know Brad (1963), Little Aloha (1963), Spray (1963), Tire (1962), Hopeless (1963), and Hot Dog (1963). Large 8vo, printed wrappers, 22 pages (unpaginated), with b/w illustrations. Short essays in French by Alain Jouffroy, Ellen Johnson, and Robert Rosenblum. Light bumping and chipping to extremities, with soiling to wrappers. Content clean and bright.
