Lubalin, Burns, & Co Type Specimen Portfolio

$1,200.00

Set of six promotional catalogs showcasing typeface and typography designs from the influential and now iconic graphic design firm of Lubalin, Burns, & Co. (formerly Lubalin, Smith, Carnase), self-published in a limited edition in 1970. Included are the following titles: The First Typo-Graphics Agency; Typeface Directory; Typo-Graphics; LSC Book; Avant Garde Gothic; and Transfer Sheets. The first five titles are in 8vo (6” x 9”) format, 32-191 pages, with stiff printed and engraved or embossed wrappers, printed by Glenn Printing Inc, and embossed and engraved by Siegrist Engraving Co. They are illustrated throughout with trademarks, logos, corporate identity design, architectural graphics, advertising design, poster design, and book jacket design, altogether presenting a portfolio of the company’s typographical offerings and capabilities. The sixth title, Transfer Sheets, contains 37 loose rubbing sheets featuring the fonts Avant Garde, LSC Book, Busorama, LSC Caslon, and Ronda. It comes in a folded stiff paper sleeve, printed and engraved. With a promotional letter laid in bearing the facsimile signatures of Herb Lubalin and Aaron Burns. The set itself is housed in its original folding cardboard box, complete with a Lubalin Burns, & Co mailing label addressed to Vaha (Vic) Kirishjian, a CBS Television Network in-house MAD man. Given the near fine condition of the booklets throughout, it is unlikely they were removed from the box more than a few times. Some rubbing and bumping to the mailing box; otherwise an exceptionally fine, complete archive. Quite rare thus.
