"Systemic Painting" presents "the first intensive showing of a tendency in American painting that has been increasing in importance during the past several years.a tendency among many younger artists today to work according to a system, a plan or organized method as an alternative to earlier gestural and expressionists styles". With an introduction by Alloway, statements by artists Jo Baer, Dean Fleming, Will Insley, Tadaaki Kuwayama, David Lee, Robert Mangold, Edwin Ruda, and Larry Zox, with a bibliography at the end. Featured artists include Agnes Martin, Leon Polk Smith, Ellsworth Kelly, Paul Feeley, and Kenneth Noland. This copy was a gift to the Art Students League by American painter, printmaker, educator and long-time Art Students League instructor Harry Sternberg. With Sternberg's signature on the title page. 4to. 68 p.p. Printed in an edition of 2,000 and designed by Herbert Matter. Mild rubbing to wrappers; creasing to Page 43 (see photo).
